Community-based social innovations to support older people: Pre-call announcement to identify case study sites in middle-income countries

The World Health Organization Centre for Health Development Kobe and RAND Europe would like to invite pre-applications for case-studies on community-based social innovations (CBSIs) that support older people in middle-income countries (MICs). A full call for applications will be made at the beginning of November 2016. At this stage we would like to gauge interest and identify the range of CBSIs potentially eligible and to raise awareness about the study.

Optimising the community-based aproach to health care improvement comparative case studies of the clinical community model in practice

Community-based approaches to healthcare improvement are receiving increasing attention. Such approaches could offer an infrastructure for efficient knowledge-sharing and a potent means of influencing behaviours, but their potential is yet to be optimised. After briefly reviewing challenges to community based approaches this study describes in detail the clinical community model. Through exploring clinical communities in practice, they seek to identify practical lessons for optimising this community-based approach to healthcare improvement.

Early findings from the evaluation of the integrated care and support pioneers in England

Integrating health and social care is priority in England, although there is little evidence that previous iniciatives have reduce hospitals admissions or costs. Twenty-five Integrated Care Pioneers have been established to drive change "at scale and place". The early phases of their evaluation (April 2014-June 2016) aimed to identify their objetives, plans ans activities, and to assess the extend to which they have overcome barriers to integration. In the longer-term, we will assess whether integrated care leads to improved outcomes and quality of care and at what cost.

Community-Based Social Innovations

This research defined CBSIs as community initiatives that seek to: a) empower older people to improve their self-efficacy in caring for themselves and their peers; b) maintain their well-being and; c) promote social cohesion and inclusiveness. Health systems across both developed and developing regions struggle to meet the diverse and complex needs of increasing number of older persons. This study hypothesized that community based social innovations (CBSIs) can improve the health and well-being of older people through community-based care.
